Talking to a professional counselor about how you’re feeling can help in a lot of ways.
1. Helps you to sort through your feelings:
Talking out loud about what is going on in your head and explaining it to someone else, even if you think it doesn’t make sense, helps you to clarify the things that are bothering you and often makes it less scary.
2. Helps you to put things in perspective: Keeping things to yourself can make a situation more overwhelming than it actually is; but talking about the issue can enable you to see the situation in another light. Someone outside the situation will be able to be more objective about what is going on.
3. Helps you to release tension: You might not realize it, but carrying a worried head on your shoulders every day, creates a lot of physical tension. However, talking about it can ease the tension and make your muscles relax. You would be amazed at what a release it can be to get things off your chest.
